St. Louis Jazz Talk

Join Dick Ulett and co-hosts Mike and Rob Silverman as they talk with local talent and feature their music. WSIE-FM loves St. Louis and the jazz that emanates from this great city. Benefit For Willie At The Kranzberg

A benefit concert, on behalf of legendary St. Louis tenor man Willie Akins, is set for 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 4, at the Kranzberg Arts Center on North Grand in St. Louis, just down the block from the Fox Theatre. In addition to an appearance by Willie himself, jazz singer Joe Mancuso, who has organized the benefit, will be joined by pianist Adam Maness, bassist Willem von Hombracht and drummer Steve Davis. Special guests include guitarist Dave Black, singer Erika Johnson, drummer Montez Coleman, guitarist Eric Slaughter and trumpeter Randy Holmes. Proceeds will help Willie with recent medical bills and loss of income because of ill health. Tickets are available on line at mancuso-akins.brownpapertickets.com.

August Jazz at Thurman’s

There’s jazz entertainment weekly at Thurman’s Grill in the Shaw Neighborhood of St. Louis: at 8 p.m. on the 29th, Wack A Doo.

Carolbeth True At Nathalie’s And The Bistro

Pianist Carolbeth True and her group, Two Times tRUE, will appear Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 16-17, at The Ferring Jazz Bistro featuring bassist Glen Smith and drummer Dave True. Also featured will be saxophonist Larry Johnson.

Randy Holmes At The Ozark

Trumpeter Randy Holmes and his quintet will play two sets starting at 8 p.m. Saturday, August 29th, with vocalist Kim Fuller presenting a tribute to the music of Charlie Parker and Dinah Washington (both were born on the same date 4 years apart). This concert will take place at The Ozark Theatre, 103 E. Lockwood, Webster Groves 63119. The group also features saxophonist Larry Smith, pianist Carolbeth True, bassist Eric Warren and drummer Kevin Gianino.

St. Louis Singers Featured

The 6th annual Jazz Haven Series, “Jazz Legends,” will be presented at 4 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 30, at at the James Eagan Theatre in Florissant, Missouri. It’s an historical and musical presentation featuring Jeanne Trevor, Joe Mancuso, Uvee Hayes, Wendy L. Gordon and more. Ticket information is available by calling at 314-921-5678.

Jazz Jam At Shaker’s

Shaker’s, 554 East Broadway, in Alton, is the place for a weekly jazz jam session from 6-10 p.m. Wednesdays, hosted by Ellen Martinez and Bob Werner. Amps and PA systems are provided. More information is available by calling (618) 462-4945.

Doug Burns Duo At The Feasting Fox
